To me, scene fashion is a balanced combo of monkey, punky, funky, chunky and junky. You want to have that element of cuddly/colorful cutie-pie smart-monkey, but also that dark-side/edgy/don't-mess-with-me punky element. Scene is the tension between adorably cutesy and hardcore.
To start with junky, I think every girl needs a junk chain necklace. For mine, I started with a long chain necklace with hearts on it, and added padlocks, keys, more chains, a giant heart key-chain, and a rail-road-crossing pendant. Since it's so long, I also wear a little silver monogram necklace closer to my neck. For you, it may be different. You might want leather, beads, and arrowheads with 2 thin silver chains. Or you might want a single thick chain paired with a hot pink jelly necklace with a One Direction dogtag. Or you might want a cool stone, a clay chinese pendant, and chains intertwined with leather. Creative freedom here, peeps.
Funky to me means leggings with large giraffe patterns, an oversized graphic soul band T-shirt, a weird pair of earrings that makes people do a double take (Claire's or Walmart are good places to shop for that), a hip-hop hat with "nerd" or a city name, a tall pair of All-star sneakers with zebra shoelaces.
Chunky automatically makes me think of large plastic neon jewelry, especially multiple rings. Also, thick printed headbands are in. Personally, I also like thin headbands with ribbons and little bead strings on them. I got one at a Valentine's Day theme sale at a dollor store, but I wear it all year! |

Don't make it look like Hot Topic is the only store that threw up in your closet. Think outside the proverbial box.
Go bargain-hunting, find things in unexpected places! Make Thrift Shop by Mackelmore your theme song and go pop some tags at the Goodwill! That place is chock-full of weird flamboyant awesome vintage swag! Also, JCPenney and Rue-21 are great! Ordering online rocks too! That's how I got my elbow-length fishnet arm-warmers and giant silver angel wing earrings!
People are left to drop their jaw and be like, "WOW! That's unique! Where did you GET it?"
Then you can be all mysterious about it while you bask in your glory, until you finally tell them!
