It’s one thing to brag; it’s another to deliver. From what’s said about Chris Brown, he’s not much for bragging. He describes himself as modest, but he also recognizes his talent. There is something undeniable about Brown’s voice and performance style, and it’s apparent from the first listen. Benefiting from a mix of small-town charm and big-city pipes, he has an ability to be convincing both on his recordings and on stage.
Whether the public will stay true to Chris Brown and support him for decades to come has yet to be seen. It’s a good sign, however, that comparisons are already being drawn with more established R&B artists like Usher. Brown clearly recognizes the precarious position he’s in; he knows that he has to strike a balance between raunchiness and boyishness both in his music and his image.
To that end, he puts himself in his fans' shoes when trying to determine which tracks are right for him. This awareness and his willingness to improve himself certainly help make a case for his longevity. Like the artists who influenced him -- such as Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Stevie Wonder -- Chris Brown wants to establish himself live with his Up Close And Personal Tour.
Being under 25 years old generally means being in teen-heartthrob territory. Chris Brown may be a bit young for full-on sex-symbol status, but if songs like “Gimme That” and “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)” are any indication, Brown is bucking for a promotion on his magnetism with women. Between his looks, his golden voice and the massive success of his debut album, he can already be classified as a star with the ladies.
Double platinum and counting, Chris Brown's first record won him two NAACP Image Awards, two BET Awards for Best New Artist and Viewer’s Choice, and three 2006 Billboard Awards for Male Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year and Artist of the Year.
Though not all reviewers are convinced, few fail to recognize that Brown’s voice stands out. Overall, his first album charted No. 2 in the U.S. and was in the top 30 in the UK. This success also helped him gather impressive momentum for his sophomore effort, Exclusive. However, its release had to be pushed back due to his hectic tour schedule.
A dozen tracks on the second record were cowritten by Brown. The album once again involves Scott Storch, as well as other superproducers, including Kanye West and Timbaland. Chris Brown’s acting career has also begun to kick into gear with small roles and guest appearances on television, and his first major film role in 2007's Stomp the yard
There is an assured self-awareness about Brown that helps him transcend teen-idol status. The confidence of his delivery and the precision of his vocal licks make him easy to listen to; it also doesn’t hurt that the team behind him includes some of the most credible urban pop luminaries of the last 10 years. But while that may impress the Academy and get him a Grammy or two, it’s the “local boy makes good” aspect of Chris Brown that resonates with his peers and fans.
Brown looks most comfortable wearing pretty much the same hoodie, baseball cap and jeans as the next guy. His look says he’s in no hurry to be other than what he is: a good-looking kid who smiles easily and carries himself with a casual grace that is just a bit more refined than what you might expect from the average guy his age.
secert wish:
For Chris Brown to find a universally respected female performer for a duet.
